He was fighting a lone battle to save the Ganga, but neither the government nor the media showed any concern. He died a martyr for a huge cause.

As news reports have pointed out, Swami Nigamanand, fasting for the Ganga in relative anonymity, lasted 68 days before he was force-fed and died in the hospital where Ramdev broke his fast, on the 115th day. Potti Sriramulu, fasting for an Andhra State, lasted 82 days; Bhagat Singh, demanding better conditions for prisoners, lasted 63 days; why even Mamata Banerjee, fasting for Singur, lasted 25 days. And Mahatma Gandhi lasted 21 days.

Nigamananda, 34, was born in this village and spent his childhood there. He left the village when he was 17.  Rekha Jha (his aunt who is working as a teacher in Bihar) said that the news of his death sent shock waves throughout the village. "All the villagers are mourning, no one cook food on Tuesday night to show solidarity for our grief-stricken family. After all Nigamananda was the real son of the soil; a true saint not a media-created one," she said.
