Poor voting percentage in GHMC may effect Loksatta

23. November 2009 by close to reality 5 Comments

Only 43 - 44 % poling has been recorded in today's GHMC elections. The effect of money and liquour didn't show up and it seems voters of hyderabad are not interested to cast their vote to someone whom they feel not eligible. But the worst case is, there are certain divisions where not even 1/3rd of the over all voters used their vote and so, the person whoever is going to win is not someone chosen by all the people of that division. (at least not even half of the population). So, a fellow who has been chosen by 20 to 22% of the people in that division is going to be their corporator.

:) Ironically, the people who didn't use their vote will pay for what they did in the coming five years. Loksatta kept its hopes on high polling percentage as there will be many educated youth in the city who are influenced by Jaya Prakash Narayan's talent infront of cameras will come and vote for loksatta this time. but unfortunately, the poor turn out of the voters poured water on their hopes. Let us wait until 26th, and see what the outcome is going to be.

dear friend,
I beleive you understand that Loksatta has been championing the cause of good governance and people centric politics from the grass roots to the union government and as part of that has committed itself to change the political culture of political parties by setting an example and the people by educating them on the importance and utility of vote. However, we the people who have become complaint boxes on one hand lazy on the other to such an extent that we prefer to sit home and enjoy a day and suffer for the next 5 years than walk up to the booth and vote for the right party with right candidates. So, we not voting is we pouring water on our hopes of having a better hyderabad and loksatta hoping to show how better hyderabad can be and not we pouring hopes on loksatta's chance of winningl. So, if "we, the people" (that includes you and I) really understand our locus standi and if "we the people" are really serious about transforming the same, let's first put a genuine cause in the right perspective.

@ Sunil,
Thank you for sharing your ideas with our readers. I agree that loksatta came up with 'change', but i heard something today. Is it true that loksatta members voted for Congress for a 'change' in GHMC elections?

Someone raised one more doubt with me. They said, "There are thousands in the party membership records in Twin cities, but when converted to votes, loksatta grabbed only hundreds." So they pointed out that where the thousands of loksatta members votes went in ??

Do you have any idea? Were they gone for Congress or Were these so called loksatta members sitting at home watching TV and enjoying the day thinking that they can become Mike Masters at TV channel rooms for the coming five years complaining about winning candidates ??

dear Close To Reality,
what you heard is right but you have tampered the facts a little bit and have taken a pessimistic view without base. Anyway let me clarify and corroborate what i said. It is very true that the membership of loksatta did not translate into votes. let us see the facts. loksatta got close to 7% of votes which is I guess some 40 thousand votes, so loksatta grabbed THOUSANDS of votes and NOT hundereds. now let us look at the precentage that voted, it is 44%, where did the remaining 56% go?? many moved to their home towns and took a holiday which definitely includes loksatta members too. I agree with you till here. These loksatta members and the rest of India and Andhrapradesh are suffering from the same ailment "LACK OF CONFIDENCE". Let me explain why.You must know that a person has to pay 10 rupees to be a primary member of loksatta. How many would want to become a member of a political party by paying a token 10 rupees without expecting anything back? you can find such people in loksatta. People become members purely based on their support for the policies and cause of loksatta political movement and not based on anything else. Even if someone becomes a member expecting something, he is sure to realize soon that he wouldn't get anything but a chance to champion the cause of people and their future. Having said this, why did the same people (few of these) who are committed for the cause of loksatta not willing to vote?? I have talked to hundereds of people from various social, economic backgrounds and different regions. All have a common feeling, "LOKSATTA is good, it is genuine but will it win?". No party in Andhrapradesh is as democratic internally, transperent to people and members and enjoys a credibility and acceptence in people as much as LOKSATTA does, at the same time everybody is waiting to vote for LOKSATTA after it becomes stronger and therefore vote for the same old traditional corrupt, indifferent and shameless parties(take the bholakpur tragedy where people died for drinking water). Yet they make a choice, they choose the better among the worst.Hope this explains.I would say only one thing as my closing remarks as I would not be able to continue this discussion owing to my exam schedule.

If we have to have a genuine distribution of resources of nation and bridge the gap between poor and rich.....
If we have to have equality of opportunity for all which is impossible without health and education for all.....
If we have to have a well distributed development than a centralized and concentrated one leading to congestion and various problems......

The corrupt nexus between the - hooligans and politicians
The corrupt nexus between the - contracters and politiccian
The corrupt nexus between the - capitalists and politicians
The corrupt nexus between the - PEOPLE      and politicians
                                (buying votes by splurging money
                                                      and liquor)
all of this must come to an end.
And all traditional political parties which are surviving and perpetuating the above cannot change the scenario even if they genuinely want as they themselves are the problem. so the only way is to usher in a new political culture sans the above said which is what LOKSATTA is trying to do. Its success or failure depends purely on the people because that is who it is working for and with and not for or with hooligans or with capitalists (remember, lOKSATTA does not take donations without receipt and NOT from capitalists, only from ordinary people).
Hope that explains. I am sure you will have more questions to ask. I would only be glad to answer but please excuse me for now, as I am hard pressed with my exams. I am persuing M.A in Political science form Hyderabad central University, to introduce myself shortly.
bye, take care. Hope to see you again.

@ Sunil,

Good to meet you.

You missed my point. I am only talking about the members of LOKSATTA, not common man who is not registered himself into any political party.

I do agree with you that the poll percentage is less than 44%, but i thought those who want to bring in the change in politics, and for that become the members of certain political party will definitely go and vote for loksatta, but at the end they all "DIDN'T VOTE AT ALL".

what's the point in saying we are different when we go and join the rest of the crowds who are sitting at home and watching TVs?
