Legendary Marxist leader and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Jyothi Basu died in Kolkata at 11.47 am on Sunday. Basu had been admitted to a private hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, on January 1 and had been critically ill. The 95-year old pillar of Marxism in India was battling for his life for the past fortnight and gradually his vital organs began to fail and today he passed away, leaving a grief stricken political world.

After the first wife vimala ghosh passed away, Jyothi basu married Kamala on December 5th 1948. He was the chief minister of West Bengal for a period of 23 years from 1977 june 1st to 2000 November 6th. Obliging party's principles, he stayed away from the opportunity to be a Prime Minister in 1996.

On 1 January, 2010, Basu was admitted to AMRI hospital, Salt Lake City, Kolkata after feeling unwell.On 16 January, 2010, his health condition became extremely critical and he was suffering from multiple organ failure. Seventeen days after being taken ill, he passed away on 17 January 2010 at 11:47 AM IST.
Former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu had pledged to donate his body and eye for medical research on 4th April 2003 at a function organised by Ganadarpan and Susrut Eye Foundation in Kolkata.He is survived by his son Chandan. His second wife Kamal Basu had earlier passed away on October 1, 2003. His body will be donated to hospital for research on 19 January, 2010. as per his last wishes.
Born on 8 July, 1914, Basu was the CM of West Bengal for 23 long years and played a vital role in the Marxist movement of the country. At around 12.30 pm, Biman Bose, chairman of the Left Front coordination committee, announced in front of the hospital: "I have to give you a sad news that Jyoti Basu is no longer with us."
The 95-year-old Basu, who had suffered multi-organ failure was on a temporary pacemaker since Saturday night. Basu's personal physician Dr Ajit Kumar Maity said that the veteran leader breathed his last at 11.47 am. Basu was admitted to the hospital on January 1 with pneumonia and was put on ventilator on January 6. Basu, who had been a lode star in the political arena for over six decades, is survived by son Chandan. His wife Kamal pre-deceased him.
