An Indian, who is no more Indian, talking about India and Indians

2. June 2009 by close to reality 17 Comments

An Indian, who is no more Indian by heart, talking about India and Indians. This is what i thought today when i read the following letter that came to "Times of India"

Dear Editor:
I'm an Indian living in Australia, and I'm really disturbed about an Aussie media article published in "The age" today. The most embarrassing fact is that the article is written by an Indian. Please have a look
http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/dont-believe-the-media-hype-racism-is-often-a-twoway-street-20090601-bsto.html
What Mr.Arora is saying that, we Indians often get beaten up in India, so what is the big deal in getting beaten up in Australia.
Dear Times of India, pl publish this article in India, stating the details about Mr.Arora. These kind of people are a disgrace to our country and it's quite important for our Media to  expose these kind of idiots.

Few things that i disagree with this hypocrite Akash Arora ( the author who wrote the article for 'the age' )

He said: Going through the reports, it amused me to think of how many Indian students are bashed up on Delhi Metro, the Indian capital's new rail network, and how they never make news. In late 2008, after an increase in crime on Delhi Metro, the authorities started a 24-hour customer care and complaints cell. As many as 71 offenders were fined or punished in one month for crimes ranging from sexually harassing women passengers to bashing and mugging lone male passengers at night. None of these attacks made headlines, but an Indian student being assaulted in Melbourne, tagged a racist threat, results in a media feast. My Question: why didn't they bashed an australian student in the train, like you said in delhi an indian, why not an Aussie in Melbourne? Ok, one incident, we can think it may not be the reason, but how come 5 incidents in a row in a month of time?

He Said: I moved to Sydney as an international student in 2003 and found racism lurking more in the immigrants' psyches than on the streets. A fellow Indian student at the University of Technology, Sydney, once told me he preferred to live a 50-minute train trip from the campus in Harris Park than in the student accommodation provided (for the same price) right next to the campus. When I asked why, he promptly replied: "Because Harris Park has Indian neighbourhood, Indian cinemas, Indian restaurants, Indian shops …" Just one question popped to my mind. Why did he move to Sydney if he didn't want the Australian way of life? My Question: Is it wrong if i say, i wanted better education or facilities to study it doesn't mean that i will opt away from my own culture and tastes. World praises Indian culture, what's so wrong if someone wants to live in an Indian locality to ease his painful home sick feelings like staying away from friends and family and mother land? Do you think that everyone in this world is like you or what? or are you trying to tell the Indians in Australia that if they want to stay in austraila, they must eat what australians eat, they must sleep like australians sleep etc., or what?

He Said: And look at the ramifications this can have. It can have an impact not only on Australia's economy, with international education taking a back seat, but can also deprive Indian students of a high level of education in a country that is far more multicultural and tolerant than their own or most parts of the world. My Question: Is it australian economy concerns you more than Indians' lives? who are you? A broker for Australians? :) When compared to India, australia is nothing in multicultural, tolerance etc., etc.,

He Said: Of course, the media circus is not going to change my decision. I have just booked my flight and can't wait to move back to Sydney. For good. And in time for a sensational summer. My Question: Tell the world How much money you took to write this article in Australia's favor? to and fro charges for Sydney and Sensational Summer's expenses? People like you who use flights to move around doesn't know what is happening on the streets and in the trains.. People like you will be thinking that what you are thinking is correct, People like you will be dreaming that what you have seen 5 years ago is still the same.. you will talk like this until you are bashed up one day.

Below here are the incidents occured after Akash Arora left for Sensational Summer in Sydney.. Just to show what he is saying is not correct.

I would have to disagree with the blog above - Akash Arora is right about students being bashed up on the Delhi metro and who really gives two cents about it? It makes for about 2 sentences in the Crime section of the local newspapers. Has anyone questioned why students are being bashed up in India? Does it not occur to you that it is also a way of racism when Hindus and Muslims fight each other? Thats not really newsworthy because it is within India?
But when the same Muslim beats up a Hindu outside of India, it makes international news? Maybe thats because Indians overseas are taking advantage of the fact that they are a minority.
I agree that you should look for a better way of life and there is nothing wrong with wanting to reside in an area where you feel at home.
Also, in question is not just the Australian economy but also the relationship between India and Australia, which is now home to thousands of Indians who enjoy the not-so-corrupt way of life and a higher standard of living than in India.
This has been blown out of proportion and this will only affect the way Indians view Australia and its way of life, which in turn will (to quote Akash)"deprive Indian students of a high level of education".

I completely agree the counter argument to the statement of Indians getting bashed up in Delhi Metro, so whats the big deal with some in melbourne. Akash Arora seems to be an ignorant fellow as he is immune to these incidents. In his article he has very subtly ridiculed India and Indians which makes me think he isnt comfortable in his own skin!Disgrace

Thank you very much for your comments here in support of the cause. Even yesterday, there was a car burnt case (car belongs to Indian and thousands of Indian students marched on Sydney roads..)

@Swati
like i said above, is it those thousands of students who were marching on Melbourne and Sydney roads are wrong? or one Individual called Akash Arora? You can post your comments without any word limit but the comments are being moderated. Thank you for your views and i'll give a detailed reply to you about Delhi Metros in a few moments.

@Swathi
this is one of the responses given by us to the comments on this post at a discussion forum.. hope few of the lines here will give answers to some of your points.. thank you ..

You Don't need to know "how a Naga looks, or how a Manipuri looks?" as long as you are not going to kill them on the roads due to hatred. If you are killing someone, then you should know whom you are killing, whom you are punishing.. But not killing a Sikh thinking that a Muslim..

Anything we talk here reflects to the respective guys who are responsible.. It is a general statement, It doesn't mean that all the Americans doesn't know the difference between a Sikh and Muslim, and it doesn't mean that all the Australians are absolute racists.

This is just voicing out against those who are doing this (whatever country they are from) in support of my fellow victims whom i consider as my brothers and sisters.. But here, there are many statements people wrote against Indians (in this post itself), some said "Indians can't speak English, and some said some other thing". I am not asking for a helping hand from my fellow Indians to offer your voice along with me to reply those lines..
but unfortunately we don't object those lies, those false statements, but like in a "CRAB STORY", we pull the legs among ourselves giving a feast of entertainment to others..

"the world doesn't revolve around India.." If you are not in India, thank god you are not in India, it is better to not to have gentlemen like you in my country..

One last sentence, to whoever trying to give a lecture here by saying "Correcting ourselves, Cleaning our Backyard" .. Every Individual, Every family, Every Country have those problems. No One is exception.. those who are lecturing here, my question to all of you..
"you and your brother are fighting in your house or arguing each other, then your neighbor came with a knife to kill you, what will you expect from your brother? Give a gun to the neighbor, or tell the neighbor that ''we are fighting each other now, can you go and kill my youngest brother sleeping inside?''

Is this what you all meant by "CLEANING OUR OWN BACKYARD??"

SHOW ME A COUNTRY WHICH DOESN'T NEED CLEANING?
SHOW ME A FAMILY WHICH DOESN'T NEED TO LOOK BACK AT ITSELF?
SHOW ME AN INDIVIDUAL WHO DOESN'T NEED TO LOOK INTO HIS PAST?

NOBODY IS PERFECT, BUT WHEN IT COMES SOMETHING BETWEEN YOUR COUNTRY AND OTHER COUNTRY, OR BETWEEN YOUR FELLOW CITIZEN AND A FOREIGNER, TRY TO SUPPORT YOUR COUNTRY, OR YOUR FELLOW CITIZEN AS LONG AS THE CAUSE NEEDS ATTENTION.

I WOULDN'T BE SAYING THESE WORDS IF MY FELLOW CITIZEN IS A TERRORIST WHO PUT A BOMB IN AUSTRALIA/UK/US, AND FOR THAT SOMEONE KILLED HIM.. WE ARE ONLY TRYING TO HIGHLIGHT THE ATTACKS ON VERY VERY COMMON PEOPLE WHO DON'T DESERVE IT..

when 5 attacks happened against Indians in Australia in a period of 30days, there is nothing wrong to highlight it to the responsible authorities about the seriousness of the problem.. If thousands didn't march on the roads of Melbourne, If the print and online media didn't focus or address the problem internationally, i bet that there will not be any special force introduced to stop those attacks.. If we all keep quiet, 5 more attacks might have been recorded by now.. we did peacefully and we expressed our feelings on the facts.. there is nothing that we said something that it didn't happen against Indians.. Of course, there is a bit of more sarcasm towards the end of the post, but no one need to shrug their shoulders as long as they know the difference between a Sikh and Muslim, and no one need to bother about those lines as long as they are not going to kill a Sikh on the road thinking that he is a Muslim..

People here worry so much if we use "RACIST" term so liberally, but the same people not at all worried, bothered, concerned if only people of one certain country were being attacked repeatedly..

Then why can't we use the word? If they have so concern about being called as a "RACIST", then they must take necessary steps by doing which they won't be branded again with the term "RACIST"..

But unfortunately, they will never realize that they are not looking at the cause "WHY?" they are being called with that term, but they are only concerned about "WHAT?" others are saying to them..

The day they can start thinking "WHY?" instead of "WHAT?" things will be better, until then they are "RACISTS", because "WHAT?" we say comes only after "WHY?" certain things happened repeatedly..

If there was a fight between a Hindu and a Muslim, and due that few hindus and few Muslims fought in India ( of course a hindu's brothers, sisters and relatives will be hindus mostly.. and these are the people will come in support of him if he has problems, and the same reasoning applicable for a muslim)..

So, when they fought over, how come the western media can so liberally use a word called "COMMUNAL RIOTS IN INDIA" ??? why can't the media can think that this is a fight between few people or few individuals, It is not a fight of two religions ??

If they can use the word "COMMUNAL RIOTS IN INDIA !!" so liberally, now why they can not accept if we use the word "RACIST ??"

It is not just media, it is applicable for whoever can use the term "COMMUNAL" about India or anywhere in the world, this "RACIST" is not so different in the way it can be used..

Any kind of violence is not of my interest unless it is some action movie that i am watching..

Deaths of foreigners in India, there are.. but every case is separate and there is no one common motive behind it, one on a lady for physical pleasure and one due to the differences in the very high posh cultured group, etc., like this.. i couldn't see a common ground that we in India attack US citizens if possible, or UK citizens if possible or Pakistani's if possible..
Did you find any common hatred like because of white skin or because of Christianity or Jewish or Islamic foreigner? i don't think so we have that problem in India..

But what was going on for the last 1 month in Australia is simple and clearly visible.. "IF YOU ARE AN INDIAN, THERE IS A CHANCE THAT YOU WILL BE ATTACKED SEVERELY" .. This is what i am talking about.. Why Indian?

I think the Age doesn't realize that that article was in no way helpful. In fact Akash just deviated from the fact. Yes I heard about the cars in Dandenong. I think the Melbourne police definately need to get there act together. Apparently they don't respond with sensitivity and quick enough. However, I think the Indian media is blowing it way out of proportion. And I do still believe Australia isn't racist. Its a section of society that is. And not all the attacks have been racially motivated.

@Swathi I do agree with you about racism in India as well. Hindu Muslim feude. And no justification there except our history. But I guess what I'm trying to say is, have Aussie students been bashed up in the metro and not made it to the headlines?

though I don't condemn him for supporting his country, it is my responsibility to bring in front  some facts..

"THEIR IGNORANCE TO ACCEPT THE FACTS ABOUT THEIR COUNTRY WILL FURTHER MORE RUIN THEIR IMAGE IN THE VIEW OF OUT SIDE WORLD" that is all I can tell.. all the facts that referred below are not said by an Indian or an Asian, those things are said by their own people (or) whites (or) western/ Europeans whom they consider as brothers.. READ EVERY SINGLE WORD TO KNOW SOME TRUTHS ABOUT AUSTRALIA WHICH YOU MIGHT NOT BE KNOWING EARLIER"

"Socially untouchable" means 'Socially not acceptable" ::  Do they accept if I say "Al-Qaeda" Members are also children of GOD? Do they sleep with  "Osama Bin Laden" in the same house saying that he too is a son of GOD?
it all depends on how we take the meaning of the word..

Lebanese Gang and Mixed Asian/Arab?   first time I am listening to this.. Please show us some evidence.. this is nothing but throwing back the stone on to the victims.. why only for the last 30 days Lebanese gangs want  iPods and that too only iPods being used by Indians? isn't it funny? then what about around 1500 assaults on the Indians in 2007-08? all are by Lebanese/Arab? Doesn't this look like throwing mud on Muslim Community?

Racism and anti immigration always rears its head in bad economic times: It shows that they don't have a solid stance on a particular matter. It shows their opportunism, do and talk according to their convenience.. If 1500 assaults on Indians and the recent 30 days attacks on Indians are policing problems? Then do we need to understand that Australian Police slept in the year 2006 or something and didn't wake up till date? (or) do we need to understand that the police too racists, so.. just closing their eyes like nothing happened even though they know what exactly is going on?

if there is no "Social Untouchables" in their dictionary, then why do they have "Stolen Generations? (you can find this in the above post.. a must read, written by australian)" why do they have "WHITE AUSTRALIAN POLICY?" ,  why their country's leaders spoke the following? why their Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said SORRY in 2008?

Discrimination on the basis of race or ethnicity was legally sanctioned until 1975. Australia's new official policy on racial diversity is: "to build on our success as a culturally diverse, accepting and open society, united through a shared future".[17] The White Australia Policy continues to be mentioned in modern contexts, although few politicians ever mention the policy, except when denouncing their opposition. As Leader of the Opposition, John Howard, argued for restricting Asian immigration in 1988, as part of his One Australia policy, later admitting that his comments cost him his job at the time:

“ I'm not in favour of going back to a White Australia policy. I do believe that if it is -- in the eyes of some in the community -- that it's too great, it would be in our immediate-term interest and supporting of social cohesion if it (Asian immigration) were slowed down a little, so the capacity of the community to absorb it was greater.[18] ”
—John Howard speaking on ABC Radio PM, 1 August, 1988

At its peak, Pauline Hanson's One Nation party received 9% of the national election vote.[19] Pauline Hanson was widely accused of trying to take Australia back to the days of the White Australia Policy, particularly through reference to Arthur Calwell, one of the policy's strongest supporters:

“ I and most Australians want our immigration policy radically reviewed and that of multiculturalism abolished. I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians. Between 1984 and 1995, 40 per cent of all migrants coming into this country were of Asian origin. They have their own culture and religion, form ghettos and do not assimilate.[20] ”
—Pauline Hanson in her maiden speech to parliament

On 24 May 2007, Pauline Hanson, with her new Pauline's United Australia Party, continues her call for a freeze on immigration and provided comments about African migrants carrying disease into Australia[21]. Topics related to racism and immigration in Australia are still regularly connected by the media to the White Australia Policy. Some examples of issues and events where this connection has been made include: reconciliation with Aborigines; mandatory detention and the "Pacific Solution"; the 2005 Cronulla riots, and the 2009 attacks on Indians in Australia. Former opposition Labor party leader Mark Latham, in his book The Latham Diaries, described the ANZUS alliance as a legacy of the White Australia policy.

In 2007, the Howard Government introduced a citizenship test to include a tougher English language test, and a test on "Australian" values. The actual questions of such citizenship test have not been publicly released, and its future is in question given the ALP victory in the 2007 election.

Racism in Australia
In 1987, a sensational “discovery” was made by a Sydney University team, led by Australia’s most celebrated pre-historian, Professor D J Mulvaney. They reported that the Australian population in 1788 was 750,000, or three times the previous estimate. They concluded that more than 600,000 people had died as result of white settlement.

— John Pilger, Cathy Freeman’s broad Olympic smile is being used to conceal a multitude of Australia’s original sins, July 10, 2000

In June 1998, One Nation, an Australian nationalist party in Queensland won 25 percent of the votes with their main lines at fighting immigration by non-whites. This was made possible where unemployment was been high and where it was easy to convince the people that immigrants were taking their jobs, as it would serve to be a convenient excuse and avenue to vent frustration. In a speech the party leader said that Australia was “in danger of being swamped” by Asians and she also questioned the special welfare benefits for Australia’s Aborigines. The reaction to that meant the same party won only 6 percent of the votes two months later, in the State elections.

Australia has also had a very racist past in which apartheid has been practiced and where indigenous Aboriginal people have lost almost all their land and suffered many prejudices. In the past, the notorious policy that led to the Stolen Generation was practiced. This was the institutionalized attempt to prevent Aboriginal children (and thus future generations) from being socialized into Aboriginal culture. (This also ocurred in various parts of the Americas too.)

Aborigines are the poorest group in Australia and suffer from very much preventable diseases. For more about these issues, you can start at these harrowing reports from John Pilger a prominent Australian journalist who has been critical of many western policies.

The Sydney 2000 Olympics also brought some of Australia’s racist past and present to the fore. (On the positive side, many parts of Australia’s rich diversity in people is slowly helping relieve prejudism. However, some more traditional and conservative politicians are still openly racist.)
