It is something cool and refreshing. We are not talking about the hot and repetitive news stories that are telecasted on the name of bulletin. It is about Ram Gopal Varma’s latest movie “Rann” that takes you carefully through the narrow lanes of “hired” media.
A for Amitabh, the angry man; V for Varma, not the violence this time
Rann is a clean work without guns, not even a single punch or a drop of blood. No verbal wars, no masala shots. It’s just a simply and subtly presented conspiracies in the world of pens, papers and screens. The media mafia! The director outwitted the routine crap and tried his best to keep the presence of brainpower throughout the movie.

When you try to impress, you fail
“Khabre bana jate hai” says Amitabh in his humble confession, “We create stories to impress people, to ride high on TRP ratings.” Communicate the issues and incidents, try read between the lines with evidence...you will click. When you resort to impress people, instead of communicating you fail. Then there is no room for mass communication. This is the message of the film.
The relative incidence – the beginning of new style in movie making
Phenomenal production and presentation: Like his previous films “Kshana Kshanam” and “Gayam” it takes a week to penetrate the crowds and stir it once. It is surely a meticulous precision of frames, not a cut more a cut less...grippingly presented end-to-end.
Only minus is that popular stories like “The Almighty”, “The Godfather” jogs your memory and help you guess the next scene. Rann couldn’t escape from the shadow of “Sarkar” either.
Telugu media would respond as...
It’s a case study for people who barely follow the trends of national media and fail to maintain standards. It’s a self-check situation for the media honchos, who deliberately mix an opportunity like politics, family relations and businesses with a great responsibility called journalism.
Media - Family business for business families > >read on
Let’s give it a thought
What could be the stirring factor or incident that made Mr Varma make this film? Is that the over action of media on 26 Nov 2008, that help terrorists who seized the hotel Tajmahal or the “special focus” on the visit of duo Vilasrao and Varma to the hotel? Whatever, he answered the questions with Mr Deshmukh’s son Ritish Deshmukh.
Note: This is not a review. What is there to review when every artist/technician has done a wonderful job to review the trends of media and news value? Neither perofrmance, nor the film as a whole is rated here. One has to go and watch the movie to smell the stinkiness behind the spice of news.
